About
Wurlitztraction is the music of Chris Reid and came to life in 2004. Chris, a fledgling Sound Engineer/Artist/Designer and Musician embarked on the project with a desire to build on some previous (dismal) attempts to record Hip-hop and the experience gained playing in bands. The idea ? to combine all he loved about instrumental music particularly IDM, Dub, Kraut/Post-rock, Musique Concrète, Ambient/Minimal, Trip-hop and Jazz. It was, and still is, an attempt to marry some or all of these styles at any one time. In pursuit of the perfect groove, a tuned vibe and 'that moment' triggered through sound that paints a thousand images and speaks without words.
Early attempts sounded frustratingly both rigid and bland. The breakthrough came with a series of tracks that would later feature on Lucidity Cue where the balance and ideals were starting to be realised. 'Lucidity Cue' (a 9 track EP) was finally completed in late 2006. Reid (who inbetween a day job was continually altering the tracks) decided enough was enough and to move on, drawing a line under the tracks, some of which had been kicking around on his computer for nearly 2 years.
In the summer of 2007 he began work on the first Wurlitztraction album. With the (unfortunate cliché) idea of creating a soundtrack for a story in his head. The approach was darker and more experimental:field recordings met glitchy samples besides spaced out sound design, lush guitars, broken beats and booming bass. The album is entitled 'The Starlit Numbers On Her Fingers'.
